AmazonOutreach-MVPH

Plans for the Amazon Outreach  are well under-way and we need  general volunteers, doctors, nurses, dentists, dental assistants, individuals or groups.  Read below, or email us to learn more.

Come spend a week (or more) in the Amazon (Brazil) with the M/V Pacific Hope crew and volunteers as we help the remote communities in the Amazon. There will be medical and dental clinics, bible distribution, children’s ministry and community outreach as needed.

Sign up and come out to help! Aside from much needed medical professionals, we need a range of different skillsets. It takes many hands to run a ship ministry and if you are passionate about helping others, there’s a place for you!

Whether that be as a trained medical professional, or assisting patients on and off the vessel, registering patients, sterilizing medical equipment, reading to a group of children, handyman jobs or simply handing out a bible there are opportunities for everyone willing to serve. As international travel restrictions lift, we welcome you to join us!

Check out some of what we learned on our planning visit to Amazon.

For more information, please reach out to volunteer@mvpacifichope.org and read below for additional details on what is in store for 2022!

What You Need to Know

WHERE: The Amazon is in Brazil in South America. You will fly in and out of the city of Manaus, Brazil. We will pick you up from the airport and take you about a 45min drive to the port where the MV Pacific Hope will be docked. After a team meet and greet and a safety briefing, teams will depart for the remote communities in the Amazon.

HOW LONG?: Outreaches are ranged between 7-10 days from drop off and pick up.

WHEN: Outreaches will resume in Winter 2022. Plans are to start with an vision/eye glasses clinic.

COST: $100 per night. This includes airport pick up/drop off, food and lodging. Please contact us if you are a student, local missionary/volunteer or would like to serve as crew for longer term.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITY: Travel insurance, vaccinations and airfares are your responsibility. It is your responsibility to be up to date on all your shots and to have the travel insurance plan that suits you. We recommend when purchasing flights to use our travel agent. This will make travel smoother and allows the possibility to be booked together with other team members.

HOW DO I APPLY: Fill out our online application and our registration team will contact you.  Any questions or enquiries can be made to

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

    1. Can I bring my family on board?
Answer: Yes you can! It’s a great opportunity for young people and we encourage this. Keep in mind that we do not offer day care or baby sitting.

    1. I don’t have medical or marine skills, will I still be useful?
Answer: Yes! To put it into perspective, for every doctor we need approximately 7 other volunteers! It’s a lot of work to run a medical missions ship and we need your help. Whether that be assisting patients on and off the vessel, registering patients, setting up or setting down, handyman jobs or simply handing out a bible there are opportunities for everyone willing to serve.

    1. But I don’t speak their language.
Answer: This isn’t something you need to worry about. On each outreach we will have several interpreters with us. You’ll even find that many people will want to practice their English with you.

    1. What medical skills are most needed?
Answer: We have a high demand for ophthalmologists, optometrists, dentists and general physicians and our ship is particularly catered to these professions. Medical volunteers will need to provide copies of current medical licenses and certifications to MRG with their application as a requirement for authorization by the Brazilian health authorities.

    1. I’m interested in joining for multiple outreaches and staying long term. What do I do?
Answer: We do have opportunities for serving longer and coming on full-time. If this is you, we’d love to hear from you.

    1. I would like to put a group together from my church.
Answer: If you have a group you’d like to put together of 15-25 people from your church, or other organization please reach out to us and we’d love to host you. We can look at dates and a timeframe that fits with your team and the ships schedule.

    1. I get sea sick, will this disqualify me?
Answer: Fortunately, in the Amazon we are on a river and under most circumstances you will not feel any rocking or rolling.

    1. What are the living arrangements on board?
Answer: We have couples accomadation available, but otherwise most cabins are shared bunks. It’s community style living with a shared common and dining area.

  1. Do I need to apply for a visa?
Answer: For US Citizens and most EU countries you do not need to apply for a visa. Please look up the Brazil visa regulations for your country of nationality. Our staff can help you with this.
